The 34 MW Mackay Gas Turbine is a remote controlled generator that uses diesel oil for fuel.

The power station primarily participates in the frequency control markets of the National Electricity Market (NEM).  This means the Mackay Gas Turbine is occasionally required to generate in order to support the restoration of balance between demand and supply, which in turn brings system frequency back within its normal operating range. Dispatch of the Mackay Gas Turbine is usually triggered by a unit trip (loss of supply) somewhere in the NEM.
