A $53 MILLION maintenance program is under way at Stanwell power station to keep the state’s second biggest station ticking over reliably in Central Queensland.

AUSTRALIA needs stability and certainty in its government if power prices are going to come down. That is according to Stanwell chief executive officer, Richard Van Breda.

The falling cost of wind and solar generation is delivering more than 10,000MW of new renewable capacity to the National Electricity Market.  Wind and now large scale solar PV are expected to oversubscribe the Renewable Energy Target by 2020.

The challenges raised for the grid and dispatchable generation by the South Australian “experiment” are also being faced by other countries and power systems internationally.

The roll-out of large-scale solar power in Queensland – and the continuing rapid uptake of rooftop solar by homes and businesses – is starting to have an impact on electricity prices in the state, even sending them into negative territory in the middle of the day.

The energy market is complicated. With every analogy under the sun, industry-specific terminology and a rapidly changing environment, it’s hard to keep up with how the market works and why the cost changes.
