Cherbourg’s Jennakye Simpson awarded 2026 South Burnett First Nations Scholarship

Jennakye Simpson, a proud Wakka Wakka woman, emerging Cherbourg community leader and Queensland University of Technology student, has been awarded the 2026 South Burnett First Nations Scholarship.
Now in its second year, the scholarship supports Australian First Nations students to pursue university education and build pathways into future careers, including in the energy industry.
General Manager Southern Generation at Tarong power stations, Michael Joy, said the First Nations Scholarship is dedicated to empowering Australian First Nations students.
“This scholarship is about creating opportunities and supporting Australian First Nations students to achieve their goals and create positive outcomes for themselves, their families and their communities,” Mr Joy said.
“We’re honoured to support Jennakye and look forward to following her journey.”
Jennakye said receiving the scholarship is an important step in her education and career pathway.
“This scholarship opens up new opportunities for me and supports my goals for the future,” Ms Simpson said.
“It means a lot to have the support of my community and Stanwell behind me as I continue my studies.”
The South Burnett First Nations Scholarship provides financial assistance, mentoring and opportunities for vacation work, helping students gain real-world experience while undertaking their studies.
The scholarship was made possible through collaboration and codesigned between Stanwell, the Wakka Wakka Native Title Aboriginal Corporation, Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council, the Cherbourg Elders Advisory Group and the local education community and reflects a shared commitment to creating opportunities for young people in the region.
Mr Joy said partnerships like this play an important role in delivering long-term outcomes for the community.
“We’ve worked closely with our partners to bring this scholarship to life, and we’re committed to supporting pathways that create lasting benefits for individuals, families and the broader community,” he said.
The South Burnett First Nations Scholarship reflects Stanwell’s ongoing commitment to reconciliation in action by investing in Australian First Nations education, leadership and opportunity. Through supporting students like Jennakye, the scholarship contributes to building strong and sustainable communities across the South Burnett into the future.
