$70.5 million overhaul at Stanwell Power Station supports reliable power and regional economy

A planned maintenance overhaul of Stanwell Power Station’s Unit 3 gets underway this week to ensure Stanwell continues to deliver reliable, affordable and sustainable electricity for Queensland
The overhaul is part of Stanwell’s year-round maintenance program, which aligns to the government’s Electricity Maintenance Guarantee
The project will inject approximately $10 million into the local economy
Stanwell Power Station’s Unit 3 will be offline and then returned to service in July as part of Stanwell’s year-round maintenance program to ensure its generating assets continue to deliver affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy for Queensland.
The $70.5 million Unit 3 overhaul, which begins on the 30 May 2026, will see hundreds of highly skilled contractors undertake inspections, repairs and upgrades on the 365 MW generating unit to ensure it continues to operate efficiently and reliably.
While Unit 3 is offline, Units 1, 2 and 4 will continue generating, ensuring Queensland’s electricity supply remains secure.
Stanwell General Manager Central Generation Angie Zahra said the overhaul is a disciplined, long term investment in the performance and reliability of one of Queensland’s most important generation assets.
“This overhaul strengthens safety, performance and long term reliability, supporting the Queensland Government’s Electricity Maintenance Guarantee and ensures we continue to deliver the energy Queenslanders rely on every day,” Ms Zahra said.
“Stanwell Power Station is recognised as one of the most reliable and efficient coal fired power stations in the National Electricity Market, alongside the Tarong power stations.
“Together, they produce more than one third of Queensland’s electricity needs, and this overhaul will ensure that continues.”
Overhauls are scheduled on a rotational basis, with each of the station’s four units undergoing major statutory maintenance approximately every five years.
Stanwell works closely with the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) to ensure all statutory overhauls are carefully planned, regulated and timed to protect system reliability across the National Electricity Market.
An additional 400 specialist tradespeople, technical experts, maintenance crews and support staff will join Stanwell’s workforce during the overhaul, increasing demand for local hospitality, retail and services, providing flow on benefits to the community.
“An overhaul is a major project and operation and takes months of planning before it even begins – this work will deliver an estimated $10 million economic boost to the Rockhampton region through increased local spending, accommodation demand and engagement of local suppliers,” Ms Zahra said.
“Stanwell continues to prioritise local contractors and suppliers wherever possible, ensuring regional businesses share in the economic benefits of major projects.”
