Undergraduate university placements

Stanwell offers three types of university student opportunities:

School goers - experience a typical day in the energy industry

Are you still at school, and wondering what a job in energy may look like?

Stanwell offers a work experience programme for high school students for a maximum of 5 days per student.  You would do some safety training before going onto a site, and then job shadow some Stanwell employees and team members.  This should give to an idea of a typical day and the types of work we do, and the environment we work in.  Questions are welcomed!

Ask your school representative for work experience about arranging work experience at Stanwell in central and southern Queensland.

HEAR FROM SOME OF OUR GRADUATES, APPRENTICES AND TRAINEES

  • Business Trainee - Becky Provan

“I’ve always enjoyed learning about businesses and what it takes for them to run, so I wanted to see how it all worked. I was offered this position before I graduated from high school, so it was reassuring to know that I had something to move on to, and exciting to have the opportunity to work at a place like Stanwell, which makes such a large contribution to our community. My advice to current students considering a traineeship is to take every opportunity you can to put yourself out there, and show you’re interested in the job.”

  • People & Culture Graduate 2024 - Sam Caton

“I was drawn to Stanwell by its well-established graduate program and the extensive development opportunities it offers. Throughout the program, my peer group, mentors, and managers have continuously challenged me and pushed my capabilities further than what I ever expected. A highlight of my experience so far has been the opportunity to work on projects that directly support Queensland’s transition to renewables. This exposure so early in my career is invaluable and it will hopefully set me up for future success in my chosen career path.”

  • Boilermaker Apprentice - Tyler Davies

“What made me want to choose this career path was completing my Certificate II in Engineering at school. Selecting this course allowed me to be exposed to the fundamentals of what my apprenticeship has to offer, which I really enjoyed. If you are looking for a role similar to mine with Stanwell, hands down, the best thing to do is to get your name out there. Attend the information nights that are held, go see them at careers market day at Tafe, and talk to them about the positions you’re interested in. Organising work experience is the most effective way to get your name out there and to be recognised in the application process."

  • Cyber Security Graduate 2024 - Nikita Nunn

“My favourite part of the job is the constant learning. Whenever new concepts come up, I have the chance to research, ask questions and often have one-on-one meetings with my supervisor or other security team members to focus on learning about a specific topic in detail.  Stanwell has an amazing culture that welcomes questions and curiosity at every turn. Everyone is eager to help you learn and grow, which makes for a fun and exciting experience.”

  • Mechanical Fitter Apprentice - Kiera Layton

“I have always been interested in the metal/engineering industry, and fitting and turning added the diversity in work that I was looking for. It was thrilling to realise that I had achieved the job of my dreams especially in a company that was well trusted by locals and otherwise. My advice to students thinking about an apprenticeship is that if you put in the early effort, the rest will come a lot easier to you later on, down the line. So, give it your all every day.”

  • Business Trainee - Essence Clements

"It is obvious that all employees are treated with respect and care, and starting a traineeship with Stanwell was a huge achievement for me.

  • HSE Tarong Power Station Graduate 2024 - Joshua Lim

"The Stanwell graduate program with the HSE team has led me to a truly valuable start to my career. One of the most remarkable aspects to the program is the unparalleled exposure you get on site to both the plant itself and its workers. As you rotate onto site in your first year, you would immediately feel a part of a welcoming and supportive team that truly focuses on your growth and development. Having had access to various mentors across the health, safety & environmental space and the opportunity to attend different training programs that focus on technical development and plant familiarization, it has truly allowed me to foster a positive transition into the workforce."

  • Electrical Instrumentation Apprentice  - Noel Ponsamy

“Stanwell has knowledgeable and experienced tradespeople who are willing to pass on their skills to their apprentices. It’s a great place to develop lifelong skills to carry through my career as an electrician within the energy generation industry.”
