Queensland’s Future Energy Workforce Powers Up at Stanwell

Six new apprentices and trainees kickstart their careers at Stanwell Power Station during National Apprenticeship Week 2026.
Over the past five years, Stanwell has welcomed 74 apprentices and trainees through its development program, strengthening Queensland’s future workforce.
The Apprenticeship and Trainee program gives jobseekers the hands-on experience needed for a successful career in the energy industry while completing qualifications through TAFE.
Stanwell has welcomed six new local apprentices and trainees to Stanwell Power Station, reinforcing its commitment to developing the next generation of skilled energy workers across regional Queensland.
The 2026 intake includes four new apprentices and two trainees across a range of key roles vital to the future of the energy industry, including mechanical fitter, electrician, business administration, and supply chain traineeships.
Stanwell’s Apprenticeship and Trainee Program provides jobseekers with hands-on industry experience while completing formal qualifications through TAFE Queensland. The program combines practical on‑the‑job learning with structured training aligned to industry standards.
With strong program outcomes including transition into permanent roles and increasing representation of women in trades, the program is a key contributor to developing a diverse and capable future-ready workforce.
Stanwell General Manager Central Generation, Angie Zahra, said developing a strong pipeline of skilled local talent is vital to ensuring Stanwell’s operations continue to thrive and support the communities they are part of.
“Our apprentices and trainees develop the technical capability and confidence they need to kick-start long and meaningful careers in the energy industry,” Ms Zahra said.
“The experience they gain at Stanwell, working alongside our people and learning in real operational environments sets them up to support Queensland’s energy system into the future.
“Investing in local talent is important to us, because these opportunities allow people to build rewarding careers in Central Queensland, contribute to local growth, and ensure our operations continue to be powered by people who understand and care about the place they call home.”
Riley Richardson, a trainee in Stanwell’s 2025 intake, said the supportive culture and hands‑on learning has set her up for success.
“From day one, I’ve felt both challenged and supported. I’ve gained confidence, built new skills and learned about the important role Stanwell plays in Queensland’s energy future,” Ms Richardson said.
“I’ve developed strong relationships across site and been exposed to different parts of the business in a short timeframe, which has allowed me to take on meaningful work.”
Stanwell’s program continues to invest in local talent, offering young Queenslanders meaningful career pathways.
If you’re considering an Apprenticeship or Traineeship with Stanwell, applications for the 2027 intake will be opening later this year.
