Overview

Wambo Wind Farm is a 50:50 joint venture project with Cubico Sustainable Investments with two stages currently under construction. The wind farm is located near Jandowae in the Western Downs Regional Council area, Southern Queensland.

The Traditional Custodians of the land where Wambo Wind Farm is built are the Western Wakka Wakka and Barunggam Peoples.

Technical details

The project entails 83 turbines supplied by Vestas - 42 turbines in stage one and 41 turbines in stage two. Each turbine is 247m tall (base to tip).

The project is sited across 12,500 hectares of largely cleared land, used predominantly for cattle grazing.

Project Timeline

October 2020: Development approval issued

December 2022: Final investment decision reached for Stage 1

April 2023: Stage 1 construction commenced

December 2023: Final investment decision reached for Stage 2

April 2024: 75% of wind turbine foundations complete for Stage 1. Mobilisation begins for Stage 2.

June 2024: Public road upgrades underway for turbine transport

Late 2025: First commercial operations to begin

Foundations for wind turbines are a major construction activity. It takes around 14 hours to complete just one foundation pour and a crew of almost 50 people working around the clock to pour 1000 cubic metres of concrete. Watch the video for more details.

Wambo Wind Farm along with the associated Powerlink connection works is supporting up to 400 jobs during construction, with approximately 9 ongoing maintenance jobs once operation.

COMMUNITY INVESTMENT

Each year during construction, Wambo Wind Farm provides funding of up to $200,000 to support local community groups and organisations make a meaningful, long-term impact in our local communities. We support projects that make our local communities even better places to live, work and play.
