The Tarong Power Stations will take on apprentices again next year, with preference given to South Burnett school leavers, after suspending its intake this year.
Site Manager Tarong Dennis Franklin said Tarong Power Stations, which is owned by Stanwell, would take on four new apprentices – two mechanical and two electrical apprentices.
Another four apprentices will be taken on at Stanwell Power Station, at Rockhampton, and an apprentice and a trainee will start at Kareeya Power Station, west of Tully, making a total of 10 new Stanwell apprentices and trainees.
“Stanwell suspended its 2014 apprenticeship intake due to difficult business conditions for power stations, however, we are pleased to restore these opportunities to some extent for 2015,” Dennis Franklin said.
“Preference will be given to candidates from the South Burnett who have recently graduated from high school,” he said.
“Stanwell knows the South Burnett community wants its young people to have access to local apprenticeships and traineeships.
“We recognise that these opportunities are especially important for young people who want to stay living locally.”
The new Tarong apprenticeships will be advertised in August this year, to begin in January/February in 2015.
The 10 new apprentices and trainees will join 33 existing apprentices and trainees at Stanwell power stations throughout Queensland.
Tarong has Stanwell’s largest number of existing apprentices and trainees, at 18.
Stanwell is able to take on the new apprentices due to slightly more favourable conditions in the power generation industry.
However, Stanwell will continue to assess its workforce requirements on an annual basis and requirements for new apprentices and trainees will be a key part of that process.
“Stanwell apprentices get some of the best training in Queensland and Australia, including being trained to the
highest safety standards,” Dennis Franklin said.
“Stanwell training gives a great start a young person’s career,” he said.
Stanwell will announce in August how young people can apply for the apprenticeships and traineeships.
